As a professional in today’s world, delegation is a critical skill. Without good delegation skills, it’s nearly impossible to be productive or efficient. Because of this, it’s essential to overcome barriers to delegation and learn to effectively delegate tasks to your various team members. To better delegate duties in the workplace, follow these five steps:
1. Provide Proper Instructions
For tasks to be delegated properly, you need to provide good instructions about the task at hand, including its purpose. A lack of proper instructions, or failing to help colleagues understand the reason for the work causes disconnect, which can make even the best employees deliver work that is not their best.
2. Delegate to the Correct People
For delegation to be productive, you need to delegate the right tasks to the right people. Certain tasks may be ideal for inexperienced interns while other work requires the expertise of an experienced employee. This also helps avoid asking colleagues to perform tasks that they do not find challenging.
3. Provide Adequate Training
Training is critical for delegation to produce the desired results. When you train your team on how to execute complex tasks, you save time, money and effort in the future by having a large group of people prepared for the work to be delegated. Because of this, training is one of the best investments you can make.
4. Share Credit
Delegation requires teamwork and cooperation, so be sure to demonstrate your appreciation to any team member who completes a delegated task successfully. Also, give him or her credit for the contribution that was made.
5. Utilize Feedback Loops
By far one of the most important aspects of learning to delegate well is talking to your team. By having honest conversations with your team members about whether you’re providing them with proper instructions, and or giving them the correct resources to do their jobs, you can hone your delegation skills and give the people doing the work that is delegated input into the process.
While delegation may be a difficult skill to master, it is critical for optimum operating efficiency and performance. Proper delegation spreads the workload across your entire team, gets the work to the people most capable of performing it, and makes large responsibilities easier to manage.
