The opportunity to work remotely is attractive to many of today’s top talent, and Glassdoor even states that any businesses seeking to recruit new employees should offer a telecommuting option if it’s logistically possible. Despite its recruiting and money-saving benefits, however, remote work also packs a significant set of disadvantages. Before you structure your organization around a remote workforce, it’s important for you to consider the following disadvantages of remote working companies:

1. It’s Harder to Build Company Culture

A strong organizational culture relies on a certain amount of face-to-face interactions. It can be tricky to build a high performance team when your team members aren’t in the same room every day. To compensate for this disadvantage, you should plan regular events to bring employees physically together.

2. Employee Monitoring Takes Different Forms

When you’re not in the same location as your team, you face a challenge in ensuring that they are staying productive. Rather than feeling anxious about what they are accomplishing, you should structure your goals and expectations around completion of tasks agreed upon times, rather than the amount of time they are spending engaged. The truth is that you relinquish the minute-by-minute control (which is just an illusion anyway) that you have when the employee is there in your office, but you can still set productivity expectations based on the quality and completeness of assigned tasks.

3. Your Workers May be Subject to More Distractions

From the TV to pets to crying children, employees working at home (possibly in their pajamas) are subject to numerous distractions that don’t exist in an office setting. Since you’re not there to provide direct supervision, you should simply take comfort in the research that shows the higher productivity among employees who work from home.

4. Remote Work Can Lack Routine

Each day at home brings new challenges for the remote worker, and they may find it difficult to get busy and focus on a regular schedule. You can introduce some routine into your remote workers’ days by setting up regular teleconferences and other scheduled check-in times.

5. Everything Depends on Technology

The delicate infrastructure of multiple hardware and software systems is subject to disruption, and this hazard is multiplied when a number of employee devices are interfacing with company systems via home internet connection. Before you initiate a remote working environment, it’s essential that you have solid IT support in place to ensure that everyone stays reachable at all times.
